Install XAMPP

To change mysql root password

  • open phpmyadmin
  • go to 'SQL' tab, and run UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('password') WHERE User='root'; FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
  • go to "C:\xampp\phpMyAdmin\" file and update root password

To create a new user, and grant all permission to db

First create a new databasea from phpmyadmin as it's easy using graphic interface.

  • go to command prompt and cd to "c:\xampp\sql\bin", enter mysql -u root -p (should prompt you for password)
  • to create user, run query CREATE USER 'my-new-dba'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'password';
  • to grant all permission, run query GRANT ALL ON db1.* TO 'jeffrey'@'localhost';
